We studied the dual liquid crystal (LC) alignment states on ion-beam (IB) irradiated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers by heat treatment, which can be used in the vertical alignment (VA) and twisted nematic (TN) modes. Pretilt angles of LC molecules on IBirradiated PDMS layers were changed from homogeneous to homeotropic between 120 ¡ÆC and 150 ¡ÆC. This approach allows for the fabrication of various-mode LC displays such as in-plane switching (IPS), TN, and VA mode LCDs.
